Ferraro Flies to an NCAA A Mark on Friday

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech freshman Christian Ferraro set a new school record with an NCAA A qualifying time to secure himself a spot in the 200 fly at the 2018 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships later this month to highlight the Yellow Jacket swimmers in competition on Friday, March 2.

Women’s Highlights

At the TYR Pro Swim Series event in Atlanta, the Tech women’s team had two Jackets earn spots in the C finals on the second day of competition.

In the 200 LC meter back, sophomore Caroline Lee touched the wall in a time of 2:22.09 in the prelims to place 22nd overall and earn a spot in the C finals in the night session. In the finals, Lee won the C final with a time of 2:18.59, finishing almost a full two seconds in front of the next swimmer and in 17th-place overall.

Freshman Julia Shuford placed 24th overall in the 400 LC meter IM prelims with her time of 5:04.48 to secure a spot in the C finals where she beat her prelims time by almost a full three seconds with a finals time of 5:01.84 to finish fourth in her heat and 20th overall.

Sophomore Tamir Gonen also swam on Friday, as she recorded a time of 2:10.06 in the 200 LC meter free prelims in the morning session.

Gonen (200 fly), Emily Ilgenfritz (200 fly, 400 free), Alexandra Nilsson (100 breast), Kristen Hepler (100 breast), Chloe Miller (200 IM), Catriona MacGregor (200 IM), Lindsay Wallace (400 free) and Camille Long (400 free) will all be in action tomorrow on day three of competition at the TYR Pro Swim Series meet.

Men’s Highlights

For the men’s team, Tech had a total of six Jackets compete on Friday in two different meets.

At the 2018 American Short Course Championships in Texas, both Ferraro and Rodrigo Correia hit the water on Friday morning.

Ferraro obliterated the school record in the 200 fly with an NCAA A qualifying time of 1:41.26 in the 200 fly time trials to earn a spot at the 2018 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships from March 21-24. Ferraro’s time bested Ben Southern’s previous school-record mark of 1:42.21 by almost a full second.

In the 100 back, Correia posted an NCAA B cut time of 46.98 in the prelims.

At the TYR Pro Swim Series in Atlanta, freshmen Jeffrey Murray (24.06), Albert Zhi (24.57) and Austin Daniel (24.77) swam in the 50 LC meter free prelims in the morning session, while Murray posted a time of 24.49 in the D finals on Friday night.

Zhi (1:48.67) and Murray (2:00.37) also competed in the 200 LC meter free prelims.

Fellow first-year Jacket Leon Warnakulasuriya recorded a time of 2:12.66 in the 200 LC meter back prelims, before topping that mark with a time of 2:11.20 in the D finals in the evening session.

Austin Whalen (200 fly, 400 free), Brennan Day (200 fly, 200 IM), Clay Hering (200 fly), Daniel (100 back), Colt Williamson (100 back) and Warnakulasuriya (100 back) will all compete on Saturday at the TYR Pro Swim Series meet, while Correia (200 free) and Ferraro (200 IM) could swim on the final day of the American Short Championships meet in Austin, Texas.
