LB Charlie Thomas (1 – above) is the only NCAA Division I FBS player this season and one of only four FBS players since 2000 with as many as 45 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, a sack, two interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery through his team’s first six games of the season.
Top Storylines
• Georgia Tech football puts its undefeated October on the line and looks to move above .500 at the latest point in any season since 2018 when it hosts Virginia for a primetime ESPN matchup on Thursday night at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
• Georgia Tech (3-3, 2-1 ACC) enters Thursday’s game riding consecutive wins for the first time since it won its final four Atlantic Coast Conference games of the 2018 season (Oct. 25-Nov. 17). That was also the last time that the Yellow Jackets’ record was above .500 more than one game into a season.
• The Yellow Jackets enter play this weekend alone in second place in the ACC Coastal Division, only a game behind first-place North Carolina (6-1, 3-0 ACC).
• Georgia Tech and Virginia are meeting on the gridiron for the 44th time overall and the 40th time in the last 41 years. Since 1982 (the year before Tech officially began play in the ACC), the only season that the Yellow Jackets and Cavaliers did not square off was in 2020, when the ACC schedule was revamped due to Covid-19. • The all-time series between Tech and UVA, which began in 1965, is knotted at 21- 21-1. Both teams have enjoyed great success in the series at home — the Yellow Jackets hold a 17-7 advantage in games played at Bobby Dodd Stadium and the Cavaliers have a 14-4-1 edge in contests played at UVA’s Scott Stadium.
• Georgia Tech boasts perhaps the nation’s most productive pair of linebackers in r-Sr. Ayinde Eley and Sr. Charlie Thomas. The duo has combined for 117 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two interceptions, five pass breakups, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries through six games this season. Eley ranks in the top 10 nationally in total tackles (7th – 10.8/gm), solo tackles (10th – 5.8/gm)tackles for loss (8th – 1.5/gm), forced fumbles (3rd – .5/gm) and fumble recoveries (3rd – 2), while Thomas ranks fifth nationally in solo tackles (6.3/gm).
