THE FLATS – Sophomore Kaela Davis scored a career-high 33 points to lead the Georgia Tech women’s basketball team (7-4) to a 77-53 victory against Alabama State (3-5) on Wednesday night at McCamish Pavilion.

“I felt like Kaela Davis carried us in the first half,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “She carried us from the 3-point line, making six out of our 10 threes. I thought that she played with a lot of heart and energy and effort on both ends of the floor tonight. I was really pleased with some of the younger players stepping up, particularly those off the bench like Aaliyah Whiteside and Nariah Taylor.”

This is the fourth-straight win against Alabama State for the Jackets for Tech leads the all-time series, 4-0. Tech is now averaging 85.3 points in home games this season.  With the win, Coach Joseph is now just four wins away from becoming the all-time winningest coach in Georgia Tech history. Joseph has a career record of 220-138.

Davis led the Yellow Jackets on offense with a career-high 33 points, which included six made 3-pointers. Davis has scored in double-figures in every game this season and it was her sixth game scoring at least 20 points. Her six 20 point games this season ties her for second in the ACC among active players.  This was also her second 30-point game of her career. Her first was when she scored her previous-career best of 31 points against Clemson on Jan. 30, 2014.

Davis was one of four players that had eight rebounds against the Lady Hornets. Freshman Zaire O’Neil, junior Roddreka Rogers and sophomore Katarina Vuckovic all grabbed eight boards as well.

Freshman Zaire O’Neil scored 10 points this evening which marked her eighth double figure point game this season. Junior Aaliyah Whiteside also scored 10 points against the Hornets and dished out a team-high four assists.

Four different Yellow Jackets scored at least one 3-point basket helping the Jackets make 10 3-pointers in the game. This is the sixth time this season Tech has made at least nine 3-pointers in a game.

It was a slow start shooting wise for the Jackets in the beginning of the game for they went 1-for-8 from the floor but Tech’s defense forced four turnovers in the first three minutes of the game. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Peresson and Davis put the Jackets ahead, 9-5, and opened up the scoring.

The Lady Hornets kept it close, tying the game up at 12 all before building a four-point lead, 17-13, at 12:36 in the first. A layup by Zaire O’Neil on the ensuing play sparked a 12-1 run to put the Jackets back in the lead at 25-18. During the run, Tech’s defense held the Hornets without a field goal for 5:37 and forced six turnovers.

A 3-pointer by Davis at 4:35 initiated another Tech run in which the Jackets outscored the Lady Hornets, 16-2 to head into halftime with a 20-point lead, 45-25. Davis scored half of the points during the run, netting eight off of two shots from behind the arc and a layup.

Davis was an offensive force in the first half, scoring 19 points and sinking four 3-pointers. Tech scored 12 points off of the Hornet’s 15 mistakes in the first half.

Davis and O’Neil combined for the Jackets first 10 points of the second half as the Jackets went ahead, 55-35. Tech continued to build on its lead, going ahead by its largest lead of the night of 26 at 12:18, 65-39.

With 4:07 on the clock, Davis sank her sixth 3-point basket of the night to set a new career-high of 33 points and put the Jackets up on the scoreboard, 72-50. The Jackets would tack on five more points to secure their 77-53 win.

The Yellow Jackets travel north to face St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday at noon. The Jackets return to the Flats to host the Georgia Tech Holiday Tournament, featuring Harvard, LA Tech and Lipscomb on Dec. 29 and 30th. Tech faces Lipscomb at 4 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 29th.
