THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s basketball sophomore forward Lorela Cubaj is set to open the FIBA U20 Women’s Basketball European Championship with the U20 Italian National Team this weekend. The European Championship runs July 7-15 in Sopron, Hungary.
The championship consists of 16 national teams competing for the title. Action begins this weekend with three days of group play consisting of eight games each day from July 7-9. The round of 16 will start on Wednesday, July 11 after a day off from competition on Tuesday. The championship game will take place on Sunday, July 15.
Cubaj and the Italian National Team will face Slovakia, France and Sweden during group play Saturday through Monday, respectively. Fans can watch the games live via the FIBA YouTube channel.

Cubaj, who has no shortage of national team experience, competed in the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup and U18 European Championship last summer. Cubaj appeared in her first European Championship in 2013, where she helped lead Italy to the semifinals. She has been a member of the Italian National Team every summer since 2013.
The sophomore started 32-of-34 games on The Flats last season as a true freshman. The Italian native pulled down 4.4 rebounds and averaged 3.7 points per game in her inaugural collegiate campaign. She also recorded 46 steals and 26 blocks.
