ATLANTA – Incoming freshman Lewis Clinch was a star for the Select Team, which finished fourth at the recently concluded Global Games basketball tournament in Frisco, Texas, averaging 12.7 points as the second-leading scorer for his team.
The Select Team won its first two games over Africa (116-70) and the Ukraine (104-86) before dropping its final four, including a 107-79 loss to Lithuania in the Bronze medal game on Saturday. USA Basketball’s Under-21 team captured the Gold medal.
Clinch scored in double figures in three of the six games, including a tournament-high 25 points in the win over the Ukraine. In that game, he was 9-of-17 from the floor, 4-of-6 from three-point range, and 3-for-3 from the foul line. He also scored 18 in a loss to Texas and 13 in the Bronze medal game.
For the tournament, the 6-foot-3 Cordele, Ga., native shot 39.4 percent from the floor, 46.2 percent from three-point range, and 75 percent from the free throw line. He has at least one assist in each game and committed just eight turnovers.
Tech’s other two signees contributed to varying degrees off the bench. D’Andre Bell, a 6-5 wing player from Los Angeles, averaged 5.6 points and 15.8 minutes, shooting 42.9 percent from the floor. His best game was a 10-point effort (4-6 FG) against the Ukraine. Alade Aminu, a 6-9 forward/center from Stone Mountain, averaged 2.0 points and 1.3 rebounds and went 6-for-13 from the floor while averaging 5.0 minutes.
