ATLANTA – Roberto Castro and Whitney Humphreys were named Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, March 5, 2007.
Castro, a senior from Alpharetta, Ga., shot a one-under-par 71 Tuesday, his high score for the week but good enough to share medalist honors with Joseph Bramlett of Stanford at the Puerto Rico Classic at Rio Grande, P.R. Tech shot three-over 291 as a team and finished the tournament in eighth place. The individual title, though shared, is the first in the college career of the Tech senior, who has been a runner-up twice and finished third or tied for third three times. He posted his third straight top-5 finish, including a second-place showing at the UH-Hilo Invitational two weeks ago and a tie for fourth at the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational to finish the fall season.
Humphreys, a junior from Shady Spring, W Va., tossed two complete-game shutouts last week and carried a 0.90 ERA. Humphreys led the Yellow Jackets softball team to an 8-1 record last week, including the Silver Championship of the Buzz Classic. She struck out a career-high 11 against Iowa in the Silver Bracket Championship game, allowing just three hits. Humphreys started the week with a shutout against Chattanooga, scattering three hits and fanned three. She worked 5.0 and 5.1 innings against New Mexico and Centenary, striking out five and nine, ending the week with a total of 28 strikeouts in 23.1 innings pitched.
