Boston College Takes Regular Season Finale over Tech Baseball, 6-3

May 22, 2010

Box Score

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – John Spatola drove in three runs, while the Boston College (29-26, 14-16 ACC) pitching staff held No. 6 Georgia Tech (44-11, 21-9 ACC) to just five hits in a 6-3 victory Saturday afternoon at Commander Shea Field.

Spatola led the Eagles with a 2-for-4 effort on the day, adding a solo home run for his 15th round-tripper of the season. His first RBI came as a sac fly to center field that gave Boston College a 3-0 lead in the third inning.

BC grabbed its second sacrifice fly RBI of the game in the 4th inning, a hard hit ball by Garret Smith off of Tech starter Jed Bradley to left field that made it 4-0.

Bradley (9-3) was dealt just his third loss of the season and first since April 4th, after allowing five runs – three earned – on six hits in 6.0 innings. He struck out six on the afternoon.

BC starter Taylor Lasko continued to keep the Tech bats off-balance, holding the Jackets to one hit through the first four innings. Tech, however, rallied for three runs in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-3.

Thomas Nichols and Chase Burnette led off the inning with back-to-back singles, before Cole Leonida was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jay Dantzler singled through the left side on the next at-bat to score two, and Jeff Rowland hit a sharp groundout to second to score the other run.

Tech loaded the bases with just one out an inning later, but BC reliever Mike Dennhardt came in from the bullpen to escape the jam, as the Eagles turned a double play on Cole Leonida’s grounder to shortstop to end the inning.

The Eagles would grab a pair of solo home runs by Brad Zapenas and Spatola in the sixth and eighth innings, off of Bradley and Tech reliever Taylor Wood to make it a 6-3 game.

Dennhardt combined with Boston College closer Matt Brazis to keep the Jackets hitless in the final 3 2/3 innings of the game. Brazis picked up his ninth save of the season after retiring the side in the ninth.

Lasko (4-1) recorded the win after scattering three runs on five hits over 5 1/3 innings Saturday. He walked three in the outing, but recorded two strikeouts.

The pairings and seeds for the 2010 ACC Baseball Championship will be announced by the conference office before 5 p.m. Sunday. Information on Tech’s schedule, pairings, and ticket information will be available at Ramblinwreck.com.
