ATLANTA – Brandon Boggs had a career-high four hits and four RBI, and Matt Murton added four hits to lead No. 2 Georgia Tech (18-2, 1-0 ACC) to a 13-7 win Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Maryland (5-13, 0-4) on Friday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.
Boggs’ and Murton’s four hit days paced a Georgia Tech offense that pounded out a season-high 18 hits. Eric Patterson, Jeremy Slayden, Clifton Remole and Mike Nickeas each added two hits for the Yellow Jackets. Tech’s 13 runs tied a season high.
Chris Goodman (2-1) earned the win in relief for the Yellow Jackets after entering the game with Tech trailing 4-3 in the top of the third inning. The right hander worked 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. Jordan Crews worked a scoreless ninth inning, while Tech starter Kyle Bakker was chased after allowing five runs in 2.2 innings.
Tech jumped to a 3-1 lead through the first two innings before the Terrapins scored four times in the top of the third inning to storm ahead, 5-3. The Terrapins batted around and Will Frazier, Justin Maxwell, Bobby Ryan and Matt Maropis all had two-our RBI singles in the inning.
Trailing 5-3, the Yellow Jackets scored one run in the third inning and then erupted for six runs in the fourth to take a 10-5 lead. After Micah Owings drove in a run in the third with a RBI groundout, Tech sent 11 batters to the plate in fourth inning. The frame was highlighted by a two-run single from Murton and a RBI single from Boggs, while Remole and Jake Hall drove in runs with groundouts and Tyler Greene was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Yellow Jackets stretched the lead to 12-5 with a RBI single from Nickeas in the fifth inning and a RBI double from Boggs in the sixth inning. Maryland scored two times in the top of the seventh, including a RBI single Maxwell, to cut the lead to 12-7. Boggs singled and scored on a balk in the bottom of the eighth inning to provide the final 13-7 margin.
Seven different Yellow Jackets drove in at least one run in the game, including a career high four RBI from Boggs and two RBI each from Murton and Remole.
Maryland starter Chris Clem (1-3) took the loss, surrendering nine runs on 10 hits in three-plus innings of work.
