Balanced Attack Leads Women's Basketball Past Elon

ATLANTA (Nov. 26) – Senior Danielle Donehew scored a team-high 16 points to lead a balanced Georgia Tech attack as the Yellow Jackets downed Elon, 85-53, in the first round of the Georgia Tech/Atlanta Marriott Northwest Basketball Classic Friday at O’Keefe Gymnasium.

Georgia Tech (2-0) advanced to the Saturday’s tournament final, where the Yellow Jackets will play Hofstra, a 70-68 winner over Yale in the other first-round game.

Sophomore Niesha Butler added 15 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Jackets, who placed four players in double figures. Freshman Sonja Mallory came off the bench to score 13, and junior Candice McCallum finished with 11.

The Jackets held Elon (1-2) to just 20 percent (6-of-30) shooting in the first half and 28.1 percent (12-of-34) for the game. Tech opened the game on a 9-0 run and built a 28-point lead before halftime at 47-19.

Elon junior Loretta Lawson led all scorers with 22 points, which included six three-pointers. Lawson was the only Fighting Christian player to score in double figures.

The Yellow Jackets will go for their third straight tournament crown against Hofstra at 4 p.m. Saturday. Elon will meet Yale at 2 p.m. in the consolation game.
