ATLANTA (AP) – Fallon Stokes scored 18 points and made a key defensive play late in the game to lead Georgia Tech to its first victory over Georgia, with the Yellow Jackets beating the 24th-ranked Bulldogs 65-61 Friday.
Stokes was falling down when she created a turnover by batting away Kara Braxton’s pass after Georgia Tech (9-1) took a 62-61 lead on a layup by Jessica Williams with 1:20 remaining. The teams were playing each other for the 25th time.
Freshman Kasha Terry, who entered the game when senior center Sonja Mallory fouled out with 1:45 left, blocked Christi Thomas’ shot to end the final bid by Georgia (6-4). After Georgia coach Andy Landers was given a technical foul for arguing the call, Megan Isom hit one of two free throws for a 63-61 lead.
Alex Stewart made two more foul shots put the game out of reach.
Mallory had 17 points and nine rebounds, and Isom and Williams added 10 points apiece for Georgia Tech.
Braxton had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Georgia.
