Yellow Jackets Thrash Cardinals, 17-5

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Georgia Tech softball (17-9, 1-7 ACC) flew past Louisville (17-9, 1-1 ACC), 17-5, on Saturday at Ulmer Stadium, exploding for all 17 runs in the final three innings.

The late outburst resulted in Tech’s largest margin of victory and most runs scored in a single game since the 2019 season. At the forefront of that formidable attack were freshman center fielder Ella Edgmon and junior catcher Emma Kauf, who both went 3-for-4 at the dish and scored three runs. Edgmon did her damage from the nine hole as she cranked her first career home run with a three-run shot, while Kauf picked up a pair of RBI herself.

Mirroring game one of the series, both pitchers controlled the game from the circle early on, resulting in four scoreless innings. The Jackets struck first in the top of the fifth, using a two-out rally to score three runs. Kauf kicked off the rally with a double before graduate first baseman Tricia Awald sent her home with a single through the left side. Following a subsequent walk, freshman second baseman Grace Connelly stepped in and smashed an RBI double off the left-field wall to move Tech ahead 2-0. Back-to-back walks then loaded the bases and forced home the Jackets’ third run.

Louisville drew back within a run in the bottom of the fifth, scoring a pair on a single off the pitcher that made its way to the outfield.

Tech kept rolling in the top of the sixth, catapulting out to a comfortable lead with six more runs. Kauf sent the first Yellow Jacket home with an RBI single to center field, and junior designated player Caroline Davis put the White and Gold ahead 5-2 with a sacrifice fly. Connelly then stepped back to the plate and drove in two more scores on a single, followed by back-to-back RBI singles off the bats of senior right fielder Kennedy Cowden and sophomore shortstop Jin Sileo as the Jackets sped out to a 9-2 advantage.

The Cardinals once again cut into Tech’s lead in the bottom of the sixth, knocking an RBI triple followed by a two-run home run as Tech held onto a 9-5 lead at the end of the inning.

In the top of the final frame, Georgia Tech erupted for eight more runs. Edgmon led off the inning with a double followed by a single by sophomore third baseman Mallorie Black, allowing Kauf to push home Edgmon. Davis then drove in Black for an 11-5 Jacket lead before Cowden came through with a two-RBI single. Another single and walk later, Edgmon blasted her first career homerun in a three-run shot, securing a 17-5 lead Tech would hold through the bottom half for a 12-run victory.
