Atlanta – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team opens their 2006-07 regular season against the Mercer Bears Friday at 6:00 p.m. at the Alexander Memorial Coliseum as part of a women’s and men’s basketball double header.
The Jackets hold a 12-6 series record vs. the Bears and have not lost to them since 1996. This is the first meeting between the two schools since their Dec. 5, 2002 match-up when the Jackets won 96-50. The Bears return four starters and 13 letter winners from last year and posted a 14-15 season. Sybil Blalock, the Bears’ interim head coach, is in her first season coaching Mercer women’s basketball.
Tech is coming off a 90-46 rout of South Carolina Upstate in last week’s exhibition where six Jackets scored in double digits. Junior and co-captain Chioma Nnamaka led the team in scoring with 14 points and finished the night with four steals. Fellow captain Janie Mitchell notched 12 points, six boards and five steals, while Jacqua Williams also finished with 12 points. Freshman Brigette Ardossi made an impressive collegiate debut, totaling 10 points and 10 rebounds for the night’s only double-double.
Doors to the AMC open an hour before tip-off, and tickets for women’s games are $4 for adults and $2 for children and senior citizens and can be purchased at the door. The women’s game vs. Mercer will be followed by the men’s first regular season game vs. Elon. All fans who purchase a ticket to the women’s game gain free admission to the men’s game. Fans who take advantage of this free entry will be asked to move to the top section of the Coliseum before the men tip off.
