ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s football team used the morning practice for full-pads and hitting, and a shorter afternoon session for short pants and instruction in the Yellow Jackets’ first two-a-day of 2008.
The morning practice had its share of highs and lows. Sophomore quarterback Josh Nesbitt, who had two long open-field runs, connected with sophomore Demaryius Thomas on a pair of long pass plays against the first-unit defense. The defense also shined at times, forcing fumbles and deflecting passes.
“At times we were terrible and at times we were impressive,” head coach Paul Johnson said. “I thought the effort today was pretty good.”
Both the morning and afternoon practices were shorter than normal – less than two hours each.
When asked by a reporter after Monday evening’s practice if anyone had emerged as a leader, Paul Johnson said: “We need more than one person to be a leader – we need several. I think some of the seniors will step forward. I think Darryl Richard is a leader.
“You don’t have to lead by talking. Michael Johnson leads by playing at a 100 miles per hour.”
The Yellow Jackets will practice just once on Tuesday (3 p.m. at Rose Bowl Field) before resuming two-a-days on Wednesday (9:30 a.m. and 5:15 p.m.).
