Yellow Jackets Cruise on Friday at ITA Southeast Regionals

ATHENS, Ga. — On the first day of main draw competition in Athens at the ITA Southeast Regionals, the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team picked up 14 victories, two doubles and 12 singles. Six Jackets advanced to the round of 16 in singles play on Saturday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Friday opened with the doubles round of 32 in which the Jackets picked up a pair of wins to move into the round of 16. Making their first appearance of the fall season as a doubles tandem, and seeded first in the tournament, the Yellow Jacket pair of Paige Hourigan and Kenya Jones, ranked No. 3 in the ITA preseason rankings, took an 8-5 victory over South Florida’s Nicole Dzenga/Vanja Klaric. Also victorious for Tech on Friday was the doubles pair of Ida Jarlskog and Johnnise Renaud. The tandem defeated South Florida’s Juliana Cardoso and Jessica Cortes, 8-4. Victoria Flores and Nami Otsuka dropped a tough 8-5 decision to Florida’s Ana Madcur/Estela Perez-Somarriba.

Two rounds of main draw singles play took place on Friday. In the round of 64, the Jackets picked up six wins, all coming in straight sets. Gizdova dropped a hard-fought decision to UCF’s Ksenia Kuznetsova, 6-3, 6-3.

With victories in the round of 64, six Jackets played their round of 32 matches Friday afternoon and evening, all advancing to the round of 16 on Saturday. Otsuka battled back from a set down against Andrea Garcia (FSU), 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-1. Earning the No. 3 seed, Renaud also won a three-set battle, defeating Katie Kubicz (UF) 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, while Jarlskog defeated Natalia Serrano, 6-0, 6-2. Sixth-seeded Flores bounced back from dropping the first set against Ulyana Shirokova (UM), to pick up a three-set win. Both Hourigan and Jones rounded out play with straight-set victories. Hourigan, seeded fourth, drew a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Nandini Das (FSU), while Jones upended Luise Intert (UNF), 6-4, 6-3.

Action resumes on Saturday morning with two rounds of doubles at 9 a.m. followed by singles.
