DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Georgia Tech volleyball team improved to 4-0 by defeating Georgia State (0-2) in three games (15-9, 15-7, 15-3) and host Davidson (1-2) in four games (15-7, 8-15, 15-6, 15-8) in the final day of action in the Wildcat Classic. Juniors Maja Pachale (Schwerin, Germany), and Ida Mabry (Divjake, Albania), as well as freshman Kele Eveland (Grand Rapids, Mich.) each earned all-tournament honors for the Jackets.
Against Georgia State, Tech was led by Pachale and Teryl Townsend (Alexandria, Minn.) who each had 11 kills. Pachale also chipped in a team-high 10 digs for the Jackets, while Eveland recorded 38 assists. Tech’s defense proved strong as they held the Panthers to a -.013 hitting percentage, while offensively the Jackets hit .284 on the afternoon.
In their final match of the tournament, the Jackets defeated Davidson behind the hitting of Mabry, who recorded 16 kills, Pachale who tallied 11, and Kyleen Bell (Rocklin, Calif.) who added 10. Eveland paced the offense for Tech as she had 49 assists. Defensively, Tech was led by Eveland who recorded 15 digs and Geeske Banck (Moekeberg, Germany) who tallied a career-high 13.
“I am happy we won the tournament,” said head coach Shelton Collier. “We had two goals entering the tournament; one was to win, and the other was to prepare for our upcoming tournament next weekend. We accomplished both of our goals and I feel we are closer to being ready for next weekend.”
Georgia Tech will return to action on Friday at 7 p.m. in O’Keefe Gymnasium as they will host 8th-ranked Minnesota in the first day of the Courtyard by Marriott Classic. On Sunday, the Jackets will take on 10th-ranked Pacific at 2 p.m. For ticket information, call 1-888-TECH-TIX
