Jan. 24, 2003

ATLANTA – On the heels of a very successful opening weekend, the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams head to Middle Tennessee State’s Blue Raider Invitational Saturday. The meet is slated to start at 10 a.m. CT at the Murphy Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Joining Tech and the host Blue Raiders at the meet will be Chattanooga, Tennessee State, Wallace State and Western Kentucky. Action begins with the weight throw and is expected to conclude around 5 p.m. CT.

The Yellow Jacket women will be led by three individuals who posted NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the season’s opening weekend at the Kentucky Invitational. Junior Amandi Rhett went 7.41 in the 60-meter dash to earn the victory last weekend, while freshman Jessica Graff took first in the pole vault with a school record mark of 12’9.50″. Classmate Chaunte Howard placed second in the high jump but also posted a qualifying mark of 5’11.25″. Rhett also owns the team’s fastest mark in the 200 meters, while Howard also leads the team in the long jump.

Tech’s men are also coming off a strong opening weekend highlighted by a school record performance in the weight throw by Ian Brewer. He eclipsed his own school record with a mark of 55’4.75″. Senior Brian Fraser posted team-best marks in both the long jump and triple jump, while junior Michael Massey won the high jump with a career-best mark of 6’11.50.” Senior All-American Bryan Swarn also picked up a victory in the 800 meters.

Following this weekend’s action, the Jackets travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the Carolina Fast Times Meet on February 1.
