ATLANTA — The Yellow Jacket men’s tennis team had players advance to the quarterfinal round in both singles and doubles play on the first day of competition at the Georgia Tech Fall Tennis Classic in Atlanta, Ga. The three-day event is being played at the Bill Moore Tennis Center on Tech’s campus.
Tech’s first player to reach the quarters in singles play was junior Stephen Moros, who is the seventh seeded player in the “A” singles draw. Moros opened the day with a first-round win by default and followed that with a straight-set victory over Lars Ranger by a 6-3, 7-6 (8) score. Joining Moros in the quarters will be fellow junior Fabio Campos, who reached the “B” singles round of eight with wins over Francisco Alvarez (6-1, 6-3) and Guilherme Prata (6-0, 5-7, 6-3).
In other singles action, sophomore Joao Menano was unable to advance past the first round, as he dropped a 1-6, 4-6 decision to Matias Ormarza and will face Damisa Robinson on the consolation draw. Yellow Jacket sophomore Alex Navinkov won his first-round match-up with John Beckett by a 6-0, 6-3 score, but was unable to advance through to the third round, as he fell to Ben Atkinson by a 0-6, 3-6 score. Joining Navinkov as a second-round victim was freshman Trevor Wilson, who downed Charles Jarvis in the first round by a 7-6 (5), 7-5 score, but fell to the six seed Todd Carlson in round two by a 1-6, 2-6 score.
In doubles play, Tech’s team of Menano and Moros reached the quarterfinals of the “A” doubles draw with a t 9-7 win over Bohli and Haddox. In “B” doubles play, the team of Campos and Navikov dropped their first-round match to Lupika and Magnone by a 6-8 score.
The Georgia Tech Fall Classic will continue on Saturday with play beginning in singles at 8:00 a.m. Full tournament draws and results are available at www.ramblinwreck.com
