THE FLATS – The eighth-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team opens the 2017 NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships on Saturday against Alabama State at 2 p.m. The Yellow Jackets play host to first and second round action at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex. Mississippi State and Northwestern open regional play at 11 a.m. tomorrow.
THE SCENE: The Jackets are making their 18th consecutive NCAA appearance this season and will meet Alabama State for the first time in program history on Saturday. Tech enters postseason play carrying a 25-4 overall record after falling in the ACC Championship match to North Carolina, 4-3.
Alabama State earned an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament by claiming the SWAC Championship. The Hornets finished the conference season undefeated at 9-0 and own a 13-8 overall record. ASU is making their first NCAA appearance this weekend.
No. 18 Mississippi State (1508, 7-6 SEC) and No. 39 Northwestern (14-11, 9-2 Big Ten) will meet at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The winners from Saturday’s matches will play for a spot in the round of 16 in Athens on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the regional championship.
ITA RANKINGS – In the latest ITA rankings, Tech sits at No. 8 nationally and boasts three Jackets ranked nationally in singles: No. 36 Johnnise Renaud, No. 48 Rasheeda McAdoo and No. 96 Paige Hourigan. Tech has two doubles tandems ranked in No. 23 Johnnise Renaud/Rasheeda McAdoo and No. 29 Paige Hourigan/Kenya Jones.
