THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team returns to action this week in Athens, Ga., at the ITA Southeast Regionals, hosted by the University of Georgia. All seven Yellow Jackets will compete for a spot in the 2017 ITA National Fall Championships next month.
A total of 12 regionals will take place across the country during October with participants hoping to secure a spot in the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, Nov. 1-5 in Palm Desert, Calif. To be considered for an at-large selection in singles, a player must reach the quarterfinals of the ITA Regional Championship. To qualify in doubles from regionals, a tandem must reach the semifinals. Singles and doubles champions from each regional receive automatic entry.
Athletes from 17 different schools will head to Athens this weekend. Admission is free to the tournament held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The tournament will run through Monday with the singles and doubles finals taking place on the final day. The schools comprising the southeast regional are: Florida A&M, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida International, Florida State, Florida, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Georgia, Kennesaw State, Mercer, Miami, North Florida, Savannah State, South Florida and Stetson.
Qualifying action takes place on Thursday with main draw action beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday. All seven Yellow Jackets earned main draw berths and open competition Friday morning. Friday will feature the doubles round of 32 followed by two rounds of singles.
Tech’s doubles tandem of Paige Hourigan and Kenya Jones will make their first appearance this fall season, while Ida Jarlskog will be paired with Johnnise Renaud and Victoria Flores and Nami Otsuka will team up. All seven Jackets will compete in singles.
