THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will enter the dual match portion of the 2017-18 season with a national ranking of No. 7 as Oracle and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis National Team Rankings on Wednesday. The Jackets open the spring season Jan. 12-15 at the Michigan Invitational.
Tech is one of three ACC teams to appear in the top 10 in the nation with North Carolina ahead at No. 5 and Duke coming in at No. 9. Miami also appeared in the top 25 at No. 19. A national rankings panel voted on the Top 25 teams, and will do so up to the ITA Division I National Team Indoor Championships in Feb. Upon the conclusion of the two national events, team rankings will transition to the computerized system.
From the Nov. 15 individual rankings, the Jackets were represented by three in the singles rankings: No. 49 Paige Hourigan, No. 79 Johnnise Renaud and No. 89 Ida Jarlskog. In doubles rankings, Tech boasts the No. 5 doubles tandem in the country in Hourigan/Kenya Jones. New singles and doubles rankings will be released Feb. 7.
Tech capped the 2016-17 season with a final national ranking of No. 9 after posting a 27-5 overall record and 13-1 ledger in ACC play, while securing the program’s second-straight berth to the NCAA Sweet 16. The Jackets competed for the ACC Championship last season, falling 4-3 to UNC. Tech was ranked as high as No. 5 last season.
After opening the spring portion of the schedule at the Michigan Invitational, the Jackets open the home slate on Jan. 27-28 hosting the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
