NASHVILLE –The #19 Georgia Tech women’s tennis team (14-9) took down #39 Purdue (12-11), 4-0, at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center on Friday afternoon on Vanderbilt’s campus to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

This is the 13th straight first round NCAA Tournament win for the Yellow Jackets. Tech is now 14-1 in first round matches. The Yellow Jackets will face the winner of Vanderbilt and Murray State, who began play following Tech’s match against Purdue. Match time is set for 4 p.m. CT/ 5 p.m. ET and live stats will be available here here.

“We are happy to win today against a really good Purdue team,” head coach Rodney Harmon said. “They have an excellent team. It was a battle. We fought and they fought. It was a very good match to play against them to prepare for our next match.”

The #6-ranked doubles duo of sophomores Megan Kurey and Kendal Woodard gave the Yellow Jackets a good start in doubles, winning their third-straight match by defeating #72 Mara Schmidt and Andejela Djokovic, 8-5.

Freshmen Rasheeda McAdoo and Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer jumped to a quick 4-1 lead on court three, but Purdue’s Nicole Robinson and Claudia Escribnes battled back to tie it, 6-6. The Boilermakers won the next two games to take the doubles match, 8-6.

The doubles point was clinched for the Jackets on court two by sophomore Natasha Prokhnevska and senior Muriel Wacker. After falling behind to Natalia Davila and Krisztina Kapitany, 4-2, Prokhnevska and Wacker won six-straight games to capture the 8-4 victory.

“We won in doubles,” Harmon said. “Then we got control in some singles matches but we couldn’t get it going. Muriel came through for us again and then Rasheeda was right behind her. Natasha came back from being down 5-1 in the second to close the door for us.”

Wacker rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 victory on court five against Djokovic to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead in the beginning of singles play. McAdoo followed suit, defeating Robinson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, on court three.

On court four, Prokhenvska battled it out against Kapitany to win set one, 7-5. Set two was another tough one, but Prokhnevska rallied back from being down 5-1 to defeat her opponent, 7-5, and clinch the match for the Jackets. Prokhnevska also clinched Tech’s first round win last year in the 2013 NCAA Tournament against Yale.
