Women’s Basketball to Participate in 2018 Cancun Challenge

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Georgia Tech women’s basketball will head to Mexico for Thanksgiving this year, as the Jackets will participate in the 2018 Cancun Challenge. In the 10-team field, the Jackets will compete with five other programs in the two-game Mayan Division. In its 14th year, the 2018 Women’s Cancun Challenge will take place Nov. 22-24 at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya on the Yucatan Peninsula.

Tech joins George Washington, Idaho State, Kennesaw State, Michigan State and NC State in the two-game Mayan Division. Completing the 10-team field, DePaul, Kansas State, Princeton and Syracuse will compete in the three-game round-robin Riviera Division.

Pairings and game day details will be announced later in May.

The Jackets are making their second trip to the Yucatan having previously taken part in the tournament in 2015. In its first appearance in the tournament, Tech went 1-1, falling to Northern Iowa, 61-58, before defeating High Point, 81-61.

The Cancun Challenge is one of the premier basketball events held each year and was rated as a top-five preseason tournament by Sports Illustrated in 2014.  Teams stay and play at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. The resort’s convention center ballroom is converted into an arena, which provides fans a special close-up view of the games.

Seating is limited for this exclusive event, and all fans should book land travel packages through Triple Crown Sports for admission into games in Mexico.  Travel packages are the only way to guarantee admission to games at this time.  For travel package information, contact Sarah Sullivan at 970-672-0533 (email to sarah@triplecrownsports.com) or visit the website at www.cancunchallenge.net.
