CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) – Michael Jenkins scored 20 points and Winthrop beat Georgia Tech 79-73 on Sunday in the Paradise Jam.
Mantoris Robinson added 15 points, and Chris Gaynor had 13 for the Eagles (3-0).
Trailing by 10 points early in the second half, Winthrop scored 12 straight points, taking a 47-45 lead with 14:58 to play on Jenkins’ jumper from the top. Gaynor also hit three shots from behind the arc during the run.
Georgia Tech (2-2) fought back to tie it four times, including a 3-pointer that Matt Causey banked in to knot the game at 68 with 2:50 remaining. But the Yellow Jackets never regained the lead.
After shooting 58 percent from the floor in the first half, Georgia Tech hit 35 percent of their shots in the second. Winthrop shot 50 percent.
Alade Aminu led the Yellow Jackets with 19 points, and Lewis added 14. Smith had 10 rebounds.
After Sunday’s loss, the Jackets will face either Baylor or Notre Dame at 6 p.m. ET on Monday. The game will be televised in Atlanta on SportSouth. Winthrop will face the winner of the Baylor-Notre Dame game Monday for the tournament championship.
