GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech junior first baseman Whitney Haller has been named the ACC Softball Player of the Week the league office announced this afternoon. This is the second straight award for Haller who batted .500 (6-12) last week as the Yellow Jackets wrapped up the regular season with two wins over Georgia State and a weekend sweep of Maryland that propelled them into a fourth-place finish in the ACC.
Haller hit three home runs, had seven RBI and a couple of walks while compiling a 1.250 slugging percentage and .600 on-base percentage. She hit a walk-off three-run home run against Georgia State on Wednesday breaking the all-time Georgia Tech record of 46 previously held by Tara Knudsen. She now has 49 career homers which ties her with NC State’s Jen Chamberlin for the most in ACC history.
Haller hit a two-run homer in game one of the Maryland series which accounted for all of Tech’s offense in a 2-0 win. She then hit a two-run shot in game two against the Terps, which at the time tied the game at two. Haller has batted .593 (16-27) during her 10-game hitting streak to raise her batting average from .193 to .259. She has a team-high 38 RBI and is tied for second on the squad with 10 home runs.
Georgia Tech has gone from 10-21 on March 20 to 30-28 at the end of the regular season. It has won six straight, 13 of 15 and 20 of 27 heading into the ACC Tournament, May 8-11, in College Park, Md. The Yellow Jackets will be the fourth seed and play a team yet to be determined at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 8.
