THE FLATS –The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team recorded a 92-68 win against Clayton State in its exhibition game this afternoon at McCamish Pavilion.
“Clayton State is a very well coached team that plays extremely hard on both ends of the floor,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “It was a good match up for us early in the season. It was good to see different combinations together and allow everyone to play.”
Junior Sydney Wallace led the Yellow Jackets on offense, scoring 20 points and making three 3-pointers. Last season, Wallace scored 20 or more points in four games. Wallace also led Tech in assists, dishing out six helpers.
Freshman Kaela Davis was also explosive on offense, scoring 16 points against the Lakers. Davis led the Jackets in scoring in the first half, recording 13 points. Both sophomores Roddreka Rogers and Aaliyah Whiteside scored 10 points each, while Rogers led the Jackets on the glass, grabbing nine rebounds.
The Jackets used a tight defense to force the Lakers to turn the ball over 23 times. Tech scored 24 points off turnovers.
To open up the second half, Whiteside scored five-straight points, converting a layup off of a steal and hitting a 3-pointer, putting the Jackets up 63-35.
Freshman Donnaizha Fountain grabbed a team-high four offensive rebounds during the second half and added three free throws.
The Jackets took a lead as large as 36 points in the second half, 83-47, and kept the momentum going until the final buzzer.
In the first 20 minutes of play, the Jackets used a 9-0 run that stretched for 2:43 to take a 17-5 lead. During the run, freshman Katarina Vuckovic showed her versatility on the floor, sinking a 3-pointer.
Vuckovic’s 3-pointer was one of five that the Jackets made in the first half. Wallace added two while Davis and senior Frida Fogdemark each made their shots from behind the arc.
Wallace closed out the final 2:15 of the first half with eight points, helping secure the Jackets 58-29 lead heading into halftime.
Bena Hanyard led the Lakers in scoring, tallying 19 points. Hanyard and Yishica Sims each grabbed a team-high five rebounds against the Jackets.
