With a 2-0 record in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Georgia Tech volleyball team (7-5, 2-0 ACC travels to take on conference rival Clemson (8-5, 1-1) Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Jervey Gym. The match will be broadcast live on WREK radio (91.1 FM) in the Atlanta area beginning at 6:45 p.m. and live audio streaming may be heard at www.wrek.org. “It’s always important to us to play well at Clemson,” said head coach Bond Shymansky. “Their gym, next to O’Keefe, is the toughest place to play in the conference. They are potentially a very powerful offensive team but have struggled some this year with their passing and getting in sync with their setters. People like Leslie Finn and Lori Ashton always play well against us and if those two get hot, they can take anybody out and beat them. Clemson is a team that is dangerous when they are passing well.”
Tuesday’s match marks the 39th meeting between the Yellow Jackets and Clemson, with the Tigers holding the edge, 23-15. Tech defeated the Tigers twice last year during the regular season and has won the last eight contests, dating back to the 2000 season.
The Yellow Jackets continue to be led by Lynnette Moster (Liberty, Ind.), Jayme Gergen (Topeka, Kansas) and Lindsey Laband (Monument, Colo.). This week’s ACC Player of the Week, Moster is currently ranked third in the conference in kills per game (4.93) and third in the ACC in service aces per game (0.55). Laband leads the ACC in assists per game (14.27) while Gergen is fourth in the ACC in hitting percentage (.386) and second in the conference in blocks per game (1.48).
“The biggest challenge for us is getting our team ready to play after just playing this past weekend,” said Shymansky. “We are in the middle of a tough two week stretch for us where we are on the road for a number of matches and a mid-week match makes it that much harder. We are going to work hard as a staff to get them motivated as quickly as we can to get them focused on our match tomorrow at Clemson.”
