THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech volleyball team (7-9, 1-3 ACC) travels to Clemson (7-8, 1-3) Wednesday for a midweek matchup on ESPN3 at 7 p.m. in Jervey Gym.
Last season, the Jackets and Tigers split the two matches, 1-1. Tech swept the Tigers in its ACC opener at O’Keefe Gym, marking the first time Tech defeated Clemson since the 2010 season and the first time Tech swept the Tigers since 2005. Clemson won the final matchup of the season, 3-0, and leads the all –time series 32-24.
The Jackets are coming off a 1-1 weekend following a 3-1 upset against No. 18 Florida State and a 3-1 loss to Miami. Senior Quinn Evans put together solid back-to-back matches with a career-high 13 kills against the Seminoles and 11 kills against the Hurricanes. Evans’ .328 hitting percentage is ranked eighth in the ACC.
On the back row, freshman libero London Ackermann is the anchor with six-straight matches of double-digit digs and a 3.14 digs per set average. Freshmen twins Annika and Teegan Van Gunst have also been solid passers for Tech with 104 and 113 digs, respectively.
The Yellow Jacket blockers and passers will have to be ready for Clemson’s main offensive weapon in Moneshia Simmons. The senior outside hitter is first in the ACC and No. 19 nationally with 272 kills and 4.46 kills per set. Junior Beta Dumancic is also solid at the net with an ACC-best 1.34 blocks per set and 82 total blocks.
