Looking to build upon the success from the 2003 season, the Georgia Tech volleyball team hosts its annual spring tournament Saturday, March 20. The tournament will feature Southeastern Conference foes, Tennessee, Alabama and Florida, who advanced to the finals of last year’s NCAA Tournament. The tournament is set as a round robin format with play begining at 10 a.m. and ending about 4 p.m.
“Spring tournaments are great way for our team to continue to develop, especially when we get to measure our abilities against tough programs like Florida, Tennessee and Alabama,” said head coach Bond Shymansky. “Though the event is informally run, the competitive juices are in full flow and I expect our team to work just as hard for every point in a spring match as they do during the regular season.”
The Yellow Jackets return 11 letterwinners, including AVCA honorable mention all-Americans Lynnette Moster and Lauren Sauer and second-team all-ACC libero Marisa Aston.
Tech (34-4 in 2003) advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history last season, setting numerous records along the way. The Jackets were recently selected as one of four teams to compete in this year’s NACWAA Classic, hosted by Colorado State on Aug. 27 and 28.
“We hope that our fans stop by to take a look at the future of the program, lend thier support and see some good volleyball,” said Shymansky.
