Volleyball Splits Saturday Games; Finishes Fourth in Tourney

ATLANTA, Ga. (Sept. 11) – Georgia Tech’s volleyball team dropped its final game in the 1999 Georgia Tech/Courtyard by Marriott Classic Saturday evening, falling to Arizona State 3-0 (18-16, 15-12, 15-9).

Earlier in the day, the Jackets knocked off Virginia Tech 3-0 (15-2, 15-8, 15-2), as they put on an offensive show against the Hokies, hitting for a stellar .452 hitting percentage as a team.

In the nightcap, the Sun Devils won a hard fought opening game (18-16), in which each team failed on multiple occasions to capture the key first game, before Arizona State broke through, propelling them on to a 3-0 victory.

As potent as the Jackets’ hitting attack was against the Hokies early in the day, Tech struggled from the floor against Arizona State, hitting only .169 as a team.

Georgia Tech finished fourth in the tournament, having dropped three of four matches. UC-Santa Barbara captured the team championship, winning all four matches they played without dropping a game. UCSB senior outside hitter Roberta Gehlke was named tournament MVP.
