TUCSON, Ariz. – Senior pitcher Erin Voeltz (8-2) tossed a one-hitter and fanned 10 batters as the 24th-ranked Yellow Jackets (18-5) downed Northern Iowa (4-8), 7-0, in the Hillenbrand Invitational at Hillenbrand Stadium tonight. Senior Tara Knudsen went 2-for-3, with two doubles and two runs batted in as Tech improved to 2-1 at the tournament.
The Jackets wasted little time getting on the scoreboard against Northern Iowa, tallying four runs in the first. Senior Soraya Reddick led off with a walk and sophomore Amy Hosier smashed a double off the wall to put runners at second and third. Senior Tara Knudsen walked and junior Katie Donovan drove in Reddick with a single to left field. Sophomore Lauren Schlechte followed with a RBI walk and senior Tasha Waugh drove in the fourth and final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Hosier led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single up the middle. Hosier was forced out at second base as Knudsen reached first on a fielder’s choice. Donovan lined out to the shortstop and freshman Sarah Wood tallied her first collegiate base hit to left field to give the Jackets runners at first and second with two outs. Schlechte hit a deep fly ball to center field to end the inning as Tech took a 4-0 advantage to the sixth inning.
UNI’s Krstan Reed ended Voeltz’s perfect game in the sixth inning with a one-out single to left field. Erin Strellner reached base on a throwing error by the Jackets as the Panthers put runners at the corners with two outs. Voetlz recorded a pop out to end the UNI threat.
Waugh led off the bottom half of the sixth with a single through the left side. After two straight ground outs, Reddick doubled in the right center gap to plate Waugh as Tech took a 5-0 lead. Hosier then walked and Knudsen doubled off the right field fence to drive in two more runs as the Tech advantage moved to seven runs.
Wood entered the game for Tech on the mound in the seventh inning, retiring two of the three batters she faced, striking out two and allowing a base hit. Hosier ended the game 2-for-3, with a double and a walk as her and Knudsen paced the Jacket offense.
