MARIETTA, Ga. – Senior Erin Voeltz struck out a school record (7 innings) 16, finishing with a one-hitter as the No. 21 Georgia Tech softball team defeated Austin Peay, 3-1, in the opening game of the Buzz Classic for the Yellow Jackets. Senior Tara Knudsen was perfect offensively for Tech, going 3-for-3, with a home run and one run batted in. The Jackets will face Ohio at 6 p.m. tonight at the Al Bishop Softball Complex.
The Yellow Jackets pushed two runs across in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Soraya Reddick and sophomore Amy Hosier walked to start the inning. Knudsen drove in Reddick with a single to right center field and sophomore Lauren Schlechte singled to score Hosier as Tech led 2-0.
Austin Peay’s Natasha Anderson homered with two outs in off the top of the second inning to cut the deficit to just one, 2-1.
Knudsen tacked on another run for the Jackets in the third inning with a blast over the center field fence as Tech led 3-1 after three innings of play.
Neither team managed much of an offensive attack for the final four innings. Voeltz retired nine of the final 10 batters to close out the ballgame.
