THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech volleyball team (18-13, 9-10 ACC) had the No. 20 Florida State Seminoles (23-7, 16-3) on the ropes, 2-1, in the match, but the Seminoles came back to win it 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon at O’Keefe Gym.
How it Happened
After a slow start in the opening frame, down 8-3, the Yellow Jackets worked to pull within two, 14-12. The Seminoles were able to maintain the lead and win game one, 25-20.
The tables turned in game two. The Yellow Jackets and Seminoles battled for control of the match. Tied 22-22, Georgia Tech scored the final three points capped off by a triple block from Rebecca Martin, Sydney Wilson and Teegan Van Gunst to win 25-22.
The Yellow Jackets trailed by as many as four points in the third game. Georgia Tech didn’t quit and worked to tie it 21-21 late in the game. The Jackets took control of the game 23-22 and won it 25-23.
The Seminoles broke a 13-13 tie in game four with a 4-0 run to take a 17-13 lead. Florida State used that momentum to capture the game, 25-20, and force a fifth set.
Florida State jumped out to a 6-2 lead and led 8-3 at the switch in game five. The momentum stayed in favor of the Seminoles, who won the set, 15-7, and the match, 3-2.

“I think we lost our focus a little bit defensively,” head coach Michelle Collier said. “They hit .300 and .400 the last two sets so it’s hard to play Florida State when they’re hitting like that and you can’t match that offensively. I felt like the first three games we were able to hold them to a low hitting percentage and we weren’t able to match what they were doing offensively
“Overall I’m proud of the way we played and I think we gave them a really tough match. They’re a pretty good team and it’s good to see that our team’s still growing. [Including] the Louisville match I think we played better as a team and so it’s good to see the progress late in the season. I think we have a pretty good chance against Miami. We have played two pretty good matches and I think we’re going to be ready.”

– With 63 team kills in the match, Georgia Tech now has 1,591 this season, which rank eighth on Tech’s single-season record list. The Jackets’ 1,591 kills are the most by a Georgia Tech team since the 2010 edition scored 1,593.
– Four Yellow Jackets tallied double-digit kills – Teegan Van Gunst (18), Sydney Wilson (14), Annika Van Gunst (12), and Ashley Askin (11)
– Four Yellow Jackets tallied double-digit digs – Annika Van Gunst (22), Ashley Askin (12), Teegan Van Gunst (11), London Ackermann (11).
– Three Yellow Jackets tallied double-doubles – Teegan Van Gunst scored her 20th this season, Ashley Askin got her fourth, and Annika Van Gunst scored her eighth.
– Sydney Wilson hit .333, and Rebecca Martin had five kills on nine tries with one error to hit .444.
