Track & Field Opens Indoor Season at Clemson Opener

Dec. 2, 2004

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams will open up the indoor season at the Clemson Opener on Friday at 1 p.m. in Clemson, S.C.

“We’re excited to get the season underway,” said men’s head coach Grover Hinsdale. “It’s good tune-up meet to see where some of our athletes are right now before a break. We will not be taking a full squad over to Clemson.”

“We’ve been anxious to start the season and now it’s here,” said women’s head coach Alan Drosky. “This meet is always a good starting block and will give our athletes a chance to race somebody else. We are taking a limited squad over there due to finals next week.”

Returning for the men’s track and field team will be Atlantic Coast Conference champions Montrell Person and Zeb Sion. Person won the 60-meter hurdles at the indoor ACC Championships and the 110-meter hurdles at the outdoor ACC Championships. Person went on to finish ninth at the outdoor NCAA meet in the 110 hurdles to garner All-America honors.

Sion won the shot put at the outdoor ACC meet and finished the season with a season-best mark of 58’1″. He will not be competing at the Clemson Opener this Friday.

The women’s track and field team is coming off one of the most successful seasons in the history of the program. The Jackets finished runner-up at the indoor and outdoor ACC Championships, posted top-25 finishes at the NCAA Championships and had eight different All-America accolades.

Junior standout Chaunte Howard won back-to-back national titles in the high jump and qualified for the Athens Olympics this past summer. All-Americans Ashlee Kidd, Dana Rogers and Andriane Lapsley also return for the Rambling Wreck.

The indoor season will resume after the New Year on Jan. 14, in Lexington, Ky., for the Kentucky Invitational.
