Track & Field Off to Penn Relays This Weekend

April 22, 2010

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams return to action this weekend when they take part in the illustrious Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa. Action gets underway on Thursday morning and continues through Saturday afternoon.

In its 115-year history, the Penn Relays has provided competition for more athletes than any other track meet in the world. During the past ten years, more than 100,000 young men and women from high schools, colleges, clubs, the armed services, preparatory schools, junior high schools, middle schools, parochial schools, and elementary schools have competed in the Penn Relays. The athletes range in age from under eight to over 80.

Action will get underway Thursday at 10 a.m. with the College Women’s 400-meter Hurdles Championship and College Women High Jump. Thursday evening has been designated Distance Night and will kick-off at 5:35 p.m. with the College women’s distance medley. Friday’s events begin with the College Men 400-meter Hurdles at 9 a.m. On Saturday, the day will commence with the Olympic Development Men 10k Racewalk at 7 a.m.

Both the women’s and men’s come into the Penn Relays after both finishing seventh overall at the ACC Outdoor Championships last weekend in Clemson, S.C.

Overall, two members of the Yellow Jacket men’s team won events, as Steve Marcelle captured the shot put for the third consecutive year and Alphonso Jordan won the triple jump for the second straight year. On the women’s side, Bailey Wagner captured the discus, while Alana Clooten won the hammer throw to lead the way. Both Wagner and Clooten became the first Tech women to win their respective events at the ACC’s in program history.

Live results will be available all weekend on the official website of the Penn Relays, www.thepennrelays.com.
