ATLANTA – With the 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships just a week away, the top throwers for the Georgia Tech men’s track and field team head to Tennessee’s Sea Ray Relays for one final tune-up. All throwing events for the Jackets will be contested Friday at the Tom Black Track in Knoxville.
A pair of NCAA East Regional qualifiers, sophomores Ian Brewer and Zeb Sion, lead the way for the Jackets. Brewer, who set a school record in the hammer throw at the Florida Relays, is qualified for regionals with a season-best toss of 198’6.00″, the top mark in the ACC. He will compete in the men’s invitational hammer at 9:15 p.m., as well as the open discus at 2:45 p.m. Brewer also owns the team’s top performance in the discus with a mark of 164’2.00″.
Sion, who recently set the school record in the shot put, owns a regional-qualifying mark of 59’5.00″ to rank third in the conference. Classmate Jonathan Spillman stands sixth in the ACC in the shot with a season-best mark of 53’5.50″. He is just one-quarter inch away from meeting the qualifying standard for the NCAA East Region Championships. Sion and Spillman will compete in the open shot put at 7 p.m. Friday.
The 37th annual Sea Ray Relays run from April 9-12 with a field of 1,524 men’s and women’s athletes from 114 schools and club teams.
The Jackets return to action April 18-19 for the 2003 ACC Outdoor Championships at NC State in Raleigh, N.C.
