Top-Ranked Kristi Miller Advances to NCAA Round of 16

May 25, 2006

PALO ALTO, Calif. – After fighting for a three-set victory in her first round match, Georgia Tech sophomore Kristi Miller cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Duke’s Jackie Carleton in the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship, which is being contested at the Taube Tennis Center on the campus of Stanford University.

With the victory, Miller advances to face Northwestern’s Cristelle Grier in the Round of 16, which is scheduled to be played Friday morning. Times will be announced at the conclusion of singles play Thursday evening.

Grier earned one of the top-16 seeds in the NCAA Singles Championships and advanced to tomorrow’s match with straight-set wins over Ekaterina Burduli of Washington State and Vanderbilt’s Amanda Fish.

Miller, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, has faced Grier on two prior occasions this season and has emerged victorious both times. The two first met in the fall, with Miller defeating Grier in straight sets, while Miller needed three sets to down the Northwestern All-American senior in the regular-season dual-match.

With the win Thursday afternoon, Miller improved her singles record to 40-6 on the season, including a 25-6 mark against ranked opponents.

Miller will now team with senior Lyndsay Shosho in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championships, which are scheduled to begin this afternoon. The Yellow Jacket duo will square off against Pepperdine’s Dulgheru and Eva Dickes at 4 p.m. PT
