Three Yellow Jackets Claim First-Place Finishes At Crimson Tide Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Georgia Tech track and field team continued its 2012-13 indoor season Saturday as three Yellow Jackets claimed first-place finishes at the Crimson Tide Indoor Opener at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.  

In the first meet of the new year, seniors Mykhail Chambers and Eric Powers claimed victories in the high jump and 3,000 meters, respectively, while junior Julienne McKee won the triple jump.  

Chambers leaped to a height of 2.10m (6-10.75) to take the top spot. Sophomore Brandon Mbaba placed second in the same event with a jump of 2.05m (6-08.75).

Also in the men’s field events, senior Aaron Unterberger took fifth in the pole vault with a jump of 5.05m (16-06.75). Freshman Myles McDavid won his flight and placed eighth overall in the long jump with a leap of 7.05m (23-01.75).

On the women’s side, McKee took first in the triple jump with a distance of 12.94m (42-05.50). She placed eighth in the long jump with a jump of 5.79m (19-0) and senior Jasmine Kent followed closely behind with a 12th-place finish (5.59m, 18-04.25).  

Sophomore Samantha Becker placed fourth in the pole vault with a height of 3.70m (12-01.50).

Powers ran the 3,000 meters in a time of 8:24.32, defeating the competition by almost a full second. Two additional Yellow Jackets finished in the top five of the 3,000 meters in junior Alec Clifford (3rd, 8:28.49) and senior Patrick Barron (5th, 8:31.71).

Freshman Spencer Allen qualified for the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.36 and improved that time to take third in the event (8.34).

In the men’s 800 meters, sophomore Zach Fanelty placed fourth, crossing the line in 1:53.97 and freshman Cole Jackob took sixth (1:54.66).

Jamilah Middlebrooks qualified for the 60-meter finals with a preliminary time of 7.82 and improved that time for a seventh place finish in the section A finals to 7.73.

The Yellow Jackets took fourth through seventh place in their heat in the mile, led by freshman Caroline Kissel’s 5:06.41. She placed 13th overall followed by sophomore Morgan Jackson (14th, 5:09.41), sophomore Rachel Hammond (17th, 5:09.59) and freshman Maria Boff (20th, 5:20.75).

In the men’s mile, Nat Estes and Wyatt Gouldthorpe took first and second in their heat with times of 4:22.02 and 4:25.75, respectively, for seventh and ninth place overall finishes.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action Jan. 19 with another trip to Birmingham for the Auburn Indoor Invite.
