THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball sophomore Colleen Darragh and former standouts Alysha Rudnik and Hayley Downs were named 2013-14 NFCA NCAA Division I All-America Scholar Athletes.
Darragh maintained a 3.33 GPA throughout last season and an overall GPA of 3.51 in business administration. As a freshman, she made 16 starts in the outfield and tallied 10 RBI on eight hits. The Jacksonville, Fla., native also hit her first career home run against Virginia (March 12), then ended the game by hitting a walk-off grand slam.
Rudnik completed her degree in business administration in May 2014. One of 10 national finalists for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award and a 2014 ACC Post-Graduate Scholar Recipient, Rudnick earned a 3.35 GPA during the season and a 3.56 cumulative GPA. The four-time All-ACC Academic member caught 13 runners stealing, second most in the ACC, and helped pace the Yellow Jackets’ offense with 11 homeruns and 42 RBI.
Downs, who graduated in May with a degree in business administration, maintained a 3.5 GPA during the season and a 3.17 cumulative GPA. She tied for the ACC lead in sacrifice bunts with 15, seventh-most per game in the NCAA in 2014, and helped Tech lead the ACC in stolen bases per game, swiping 20 on 21 attempts.
The Georgia Tech softball team is in the middle of fall action, which includes a game against the USSSA Florida Pride on its National Pro Fastpitch Tour on Nov. 8 at 12 p.m. at Mewborn Field. All fall games are held at Mewborn Field and admission is free.
