Guillermo Gomez, Tennis, Senior, Alicante, Spain
Gomez, ranked 16th in the nation, extended his winning streak in singles to 11 matches and remained undefeated in ACC play this spring by defeating two ranked foes over the weekend. Gomez lost the first set in each case, but rallied back to win, defeating 6th-ranked Henrique Cunha of Duke, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 on Friday for Cunha’s first-ever ACC loss, then outlasting No. 38 Jose Hernandez, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 7-6 (12-10) of North Carolina on Sunday, handing Hernandez his first ACC loss of the season. The wins were the 112th and 113th of his career, moving him past his head coach, Kenny Thorne, for the Georgia Tech career record. In doubles, he teamed with Dean O’Brien for wins in each weekend match, improving to 16-3 this spring and 7-2 in conference play at the No. 3 position.
Kelsi Weseman, Softball, Junior, Hutto, Texas
Weseman batted .600 on the week as the Yellow Jackets went 3-1 and won their 20th straight ACC series over the weekend at Virginia Tech. She had three home runs, two doubles and seven RBI. Weseman homered in two of the games at Virginia Tech and started the three-run, ninth inning rally in game two with a double off the wall in center. For the week, Weseman slugged 1.333 and had a .625 on-base percentage.

FOOTBALL
Georgia Tech’s football team conducts its third week of spring practice. The Yellow Jackets will practice Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays for the next few weeks, culminating with the annual Spring Game on April 23. Practices during the week are closed to the public and the media, but Saturday morning’s practice (9 a.m.) in Bobby Dodd Stadium is open.

BASEBALL (23-6, 11-1 ACC, national ranking #16)
The eighth-ranked Georgia Tech baseball team (24-9) will host Georgia (18-15) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Russ Chandler Stadium, before heading to Wake Forest (12-20) to continue Atlantic Coast Conference play over the weekend in Winston-Salem. Tuesday’s game will be televised live on CSS.

SOFTBALL (34-7, 8-1 ACC, national rank #25/23)
The Yellow Jackets return home to host four games at Mewborn Field. No. 2 Georgia comes to town on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. game and then North Carolina visits this weekend in a crucial three-game series between the top two teams in the ACC. The Jackets come in with an 8-1 ACC record while the Tar Heels are 9-3. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game Sunday with both beginning at 1 p.m.
The Georgia Tech Softball team has partnered with the American Red Cross to raise money for earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan. Donations will be accepted at Wednesday night’s 7 p.m. game against Georgia and then over the weekend against North Carolina. MEN’S TENNIS (16-3, 7-2 ACC, ITA ranking #18)
Winners of six of its last seven matches, Georgia Tech enters the final week of the regular season in third place in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings. The Yellow Jackets finish the regular season with a pair of road matches at No. 38 Virginia Tech on Friday and No. 1 and undefeated Virginia on Sunday. All-American Guillermo Gomez won a pair of matches over ranked foes last weekend to remain undefeated in ACC play at No. 1 singles, while No. 6 player Dean O’Brien improved to 8-1 and No. 3 player Kevin King is 7-1. Gomez and O’Brien have the team’s best doubles mark at 7-2, playing No. 3.

WOMEN’S TENNIS (11-8, 4-5 ACC, ITA ranking #12)
The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will host a pair of ranked ACC foes in the final weekend of the regular season on Saturday, April 16, and Sunday, April 17, at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. Both matches will begin at noon and are free and open to the public. On Saturday, the Yellow Jackets will face No. 56 Virginia Tech (10-12, 2-7 ACC) as GT tries to snap a two-match skid. The Yellow Jackets will close out the 2011 regular season against No. 18 Virginia (16-6, 5-4 ACC) on Sunday. Tech will make two special presentations prior to the match with the Cavaliers. The Jackets will present last year’s squad with championship rings from the 2010 ACC Tournament, and will honor senior Sasha Krupina as she plays her final match at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

GOLF (Golfweek/Sagarin rank #4)
The Yellow Jackets return to action Saturday and Sunday in the Yellow Jacket Invitational at the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta. The final tune-up for the Jackets before the Atlantic Coast Conference championship the following week, the 36-hole tournament has a small field which includes Georgia State, Troy, UAB and UNC Wilmington. Three Tech players are ranked amomg the nation’s top 22 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index – James White (8), John-Tyler Griffin (13) and Kyle Scott (23).
