Guillermo Gomez, Tennis, Senior, Alicante, Spain
No. 1 player Gomez extended his current winning streak in singles to nine matches last week with victories over Clemson’s Derek DiFazio, Boston College’s Akash Muppidi and Maryland’s 86th-ranked Maros Horny, two of those in straight sets, as Tech won all three matches. Gomez also teamed with Dean O’Brien to win two of three doubles matches at No. 3, defeating Boston College and Maryland. Gomez’s three singles wins gave him 111 for his career, one shy of the Tech record of 112 set by his head coach, Kenny Thorne, from 1985-88.
Joanna Wright, Pole Vault, Senior, Winston-Salem, N.C.
Joanna Wright took first in a field of 26 at the Tiger Track Classic on the campus of Auburn University with a 4.22m (13-10) Saturday. She dominated her competition defeating the closest opponent by over a half a meter. Wright’s pole vault height set a new school record besting her own personal school record height of 4.10 meters from earlier this season at the Georgia Intercollegiate Invitational. Her height currently ranks sixth in the country and is the best in the ACC this outdoor season.

FOOTBALL
Georgia Tech’s football team conducts its second week of spring practice. The Yellow Jackets will practice Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays for the next few weeks, culminating with the annual Spring Game on April 23. Practices are closed to the public and the media.

BASEBALL (23-6, 11-1 ACC, national ranking #16)
Coming off its seventh series win of the season, the sixth-ranked Georgia Tech baseball team will play at Kennesaw State on Tuesday at 6 p.m., before hosting top-ranked Virginia for a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series over the weekend at Russ Chandler Stadium. The Yellow Jackets (23-6, 11-1 ACC) and the Cavaliers will play at 7 p.m. on Friday, 6 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday in a showdown of the ACC’s Coastal Division leaders.

SOFTBALL (31-6, 6-0 ACC, national ranking #24)
After sweeping previously undefeated Maryland on the road this weekend, the Yellow Jackets will play four more games this week. Georgia Tech hosts Kennesaw State on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in a non-conference game at Mewborn Field. Live video, audio and stats will be available at RamblinWreck.com. Tech then hits the road for the second of four ACC road trips this month. This time, the Jackets head up to Blacksburg, Va., for a three-game series at Virginia Tech. MEN’S TENNIS (15-2, 6-1 ACC, ITA ranking #19)
Riding a five-match winning streak and moving into second place in the ACC, the Yellow Jackets play their final two home matches of the conference schedule Friday at 3 p.m. against No. 10 Duke and Sunday at 12 noon against No. 17 North Carolina. Tech swept road matches at Clemson, Boston College and Maryland, and have dropped just four points during the current win streak. Guillermo Gomez has won nine straight singles matches and now has 111 for his career, one shy of his head coach, Kenny Thorne, who won 112 from 1985-88.

WOMEN’S TENNIS (11-6, 4-3 ACC, ITA ranking #11)
The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team, currently ranked 11th nationally and fifth in the ACC, will take to the road for a pair of key conference matches this weekend against the top two teams in the league. On Saturday, the Yellow Jackets will travel to Chapel Hill to take on the third-ranked Tar Heels in a noon contest. Tech will make the short drive to Durham on Sunday to face the Blue Devils, who are ranked fourth nationally.

TRACK AND FIELD
In their final meet before the ACC Championships, the men’s and women’s track and field teams will head to Tallahassee, Fla. for the Seminole Invitational at the Mike Long Track. The Jackets are coming off of an outstanding showing at the Tiger Track Classic at Auburn, their first road meet of the season. Joanna Wright broke the GT pole vault record with a height of 4.22 meters (13-10), beating her nearest competitor by over half a meter and recording the sixth best height in the country this outdoor season. Shawn Roberts also excelled for the Jackets, upping his career and season best time in the 1500 meter run, finishing first with a time of 3:47.19, which currently ranks eighth in the NCAA.

GOLF (National rank #4)
The Yellow Jackets return to action April 16-17 in the Yellow Jacket Invitational at the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta. The final tune-up for the Jackets before the Atlantic Coast Conference championship the following week, the tournament has a small field which includes Georgia State, Maryland, Troy, UAB and UNC Wilmington. Three Tech players are ranked amomg the nation’s top 22 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index – James White (9), John-Tyler Griffin (15) and Kyle Scott (22).
