CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Georgia Tech women’s tennis’ doubles team of seniors Mysti Morris and Jaime Wong recorded a win to reach the finals on the second day of play at the Midwest Blast at the Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign, Ill.
The duo opened the day with a victory over Minnesota’s team of Valerie Vladea and Michaela Havelkova in the semifinals by an 8-4 score. Wong and Morris will now face Illinois State’s team of Liina Suuvarik and Alesia Mikalayeva on Sunday.
In singles action, the Yellow Jackets’ lone remaining competitor is freshman Annelies Schenk, who reached the semifinals of the consolation draw with a pair of wins on Saturday. Schenk first defeated Illinois State’s Alana Hoffman with ease in straight sets by matching scores of 6-1, 6-1. In the second round, Schenk had to battle to earn a straight-set victory over Minnesota’s Kandis Batiste. Schenk won the first set in a tiebreaker by a 7-6 (4) score and then took the second set by a 6-3 count.
Mysti Morris advanced to the semifinals of the main draw before bowing out, as she defeated Illinois’ Eva Choe in three sets by scores of 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. Morris then fell to the Fighting Illini’s Tiffany Eklov in three sets by a 6-4, 6-7 (4), 3-6 score.
