ATLANTA – Georgia Tech senior forward Regina Tate was named the recipient of the Georgia Commission on Women Collegiate Sportswoman of the Year at the annual Georgia Women’s Intersport Network’s Community Awards Program on Wednesday night. The Georgia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance sponsored the awards program.
Tate was one of five finalists for the award, which is given annually to the female junior college, college, or university athlete in Georgia who has best represented her sport(s) in both performance and leadership. Joining her on the list of finalists were Katrina Leverett of Augusta State and Heather Nations of Georgia Perimeter College, both of who compete in softball. Also nominated was Danna Simpson of Georgia Southern’s women’s basketball team and Marjo Susan Venalainen from Kennesaw State’s cross country team.
Through 21 games in the 2001-02 season, Tate has made a solid return from a leg injury that sidelined her a year ago. She is currently second on the team in scoring with 13.2 points per game and second on the team in rebounding, pulling down 7.6 boards per contest. Her 7.6 rebound per game average also rates fifth in the current ACC statistics.
Along with her exploits on the court, Tate is very involved in Tech’s community outreach programs, making public speaking appearances and volunteering in mentoring programs as well as with the babies at My House in Atlanta.
Tate and the rest of her Yellow Jacket teammates will return to action tonight when they face NC State in a key ACC match-up beginning at 7 p.m.
