Tech's Morris and Wong Capture Midwest Blast Doubles Crown

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Georgia Tech’s women’s tennis doubles team of seniors Mysti Morris and Jaime Wong concluded an undefeated weekend in upsetting Illinois State’s 19th-ranked team of Suurvarik and Mikalayeva to win the Midwest Blast doubles main draw at the Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign, Ill.

The Yellow Jacket tandem defeated ISU’s Liina Suurvarik and Alesia Mikalayeva in the championship match by an 8-5 count, to claim their first tournament title of the year in the fall’s final event.

In other action, Tech’s lone remaining singles player, freshman Annelies Schenk fell in the consolation round to Minnesota’s 80th-ranked Valerie Vladea in straight sets by a 6-0, 6-2 score. Illinois’ Eva Choe and Eldina Fazlic defeated the Jackets’ doubles team of Schenk and fellow rookie Lindsay Shosho by an 8-3 score.

The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team has now completed the fall portion of its schedule and will return to action on Jan. 29, 2003, when it opens the dual-match season by hosting Georgia State at 2 p.m. Full tournament results from the Midwest Blast can be found at www.fightingillini.com.
