ATLANTA – Georgia Tech juniors Matt Wieters and Danny Payne have been named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference first team, as announced by the league office Monday morning.
Payne, a two-time first-team all-conference honoree, returned to the squad after missing the last 25 games of 2006 to lead Tech in average (.382), runs (65), hits (79), doubles (19), triples (3), walks (58), stolen bases (20) and on base percentage (.517) in 2007. The center fielder has also recorded three saves on the mound while holding opponents to a .208 average in 13 appearances this season
A three time all-conference selection, Wieters, a three-year starter behind the plate for Tech, is pacing the Jackets in home runs (10), RBI (56), total bases (126) and slugging percentage (.615) this season. The catcher stands in the top-10 in doubles, RBI and saves in the Yellow Jacket career annals, and in the top-20 in five other career categories.
The Yellow Jacket tandem will lead the team into the 2007 ACC Baseball Tournament this week, with Tech’s first game coming against North Carolina Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Baseball Grounds in Jacksonville, Fla.
