Tech's Howard Named National Athlete of the Week

April 26, 2005

ATLANTA – Junior Chaunte Howard was named as the Female United States Track Coaches Association Athlete of the Week for NCAA Division I track and field, announced on Tuesday morning. The three-time NCAA high jump national champion posted the top mark in the World to capture her sixth straight Atlantic Coast Conference title.

Howard scored 27 points and posted the top mark in the World in the high jump to help lead the Yellow Jackets to a third-place finish at the outdoor ACC Championships last weekend in Tallahassee, Fla. Howard, a native of Riverside, Calif., cleared the bar at 6 feet, 4.75 inches, to win her 26th consecutive collegiate high jump competition.

Howard’s weekend also saw her take second in the long jump with a mark of 20 feet, 3.50 inches, fifth in the triple jump at 42 feet, 7 inches, and placed fourth in the 100 meters, although it was only contested for 90 meters since the race started at the wrong line. Howard also competed in the 100-meter high hurdles, while clocking 13.90 in the prelims.

Howard and the Yellow Jackets will compete in the Penn Relays this weekend, April 28-30, in Philadelphia, Pa.
