Tech's Gardner, Walker On Outland Trophy Watch List

April 18, 2008

DALLAS, Texas — The Football Writers Association of America has released its 2008 Outland Trophy Watch List, which includes two Georgia Tech seniors — offensive tackle Andrew Gardner and defensive tackle Vance Walker.

Gardner (6-6, 297) from Tyrone, Ga., and Walker (6-2, 293) from Fort Mill, S.C., are two of 70 candidates on the Outland preseason watch list.

The Outland Trophy has been awarded to the best interior lineman in college football since 1946. With input from the entire Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) membership, the winner is selected by the FWAA’s All-America Committee, which selects the association’s 25-man All-America team and picks the three Outland Trophy finalists and the winner.

Gardner, a first team All-ACC selection in 2007 and ACC honorable mention in 2006, is considered one of the top offensive tackles in college football. Owning a current streak of 39 consecutive games started, Gardner was key in Georgia Tech leading the ACC in rushing in 2007 and in Tashard Choice leading the ACC in individual rushing in 2006 and 2007.

Walker, first team All-ACC and third team All-American (AP and Rivals) in 2007, recorded 8.5 sacks last season. Walker teams with senior teammate Darryl Richard to give the Yellow Jackets an outstanding one-two punch at defensive tackle.

There are seven players from the ACC on the Outland watch list with Georgia Tech the only school represented by more than one player. Only LSU (four players), Mississippi (3) and Oklahoma (3) have more players on the list than Georgia Tech.

The 2008 Outland Trophy announcement will be on Dec. 11 in Orlando, Fla., on the ESPNU Home Depot College Football Awards Show. Three finalists will appear on the show. The Outland Trophy presentation banquet, sponsored by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee, will be on Jan. 15, 2008 in Omaha, Neb.

The Outland Trophy is named after the late John Outland, a lineman at Pennsylvania at the turn of the century. Senior defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, who played for the national champion LSU Tigers, won the 2007 Outland Trophy.

Additional Outland Trophy candidates may be added during the course of the season. Tackles, guards and centers are eligible for consideration.
