Tech Women's Tennis Upset by Virginia in ACC Quarterfinals, 4-3

April 18, 2003

RALEIGH – The fourth-seeded Georgia Tech women’s tennis got singles wins from Jaime Wong, Lyndsay Shosho and Sekita Grant but could not rally after doubles play and dropped a 4-3 decision to fifth-seeded Virginia in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament in Raleigh, N.C. The four-day event is being contested at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center.

The Yellow Jackets (13-6) fell behind early to the Cavaliers (15-8) by dropping a pair of doubles matches. Tech’s lone win in the first part of the match came at No. 3 doubles as the team of Mysti Morris and Lyndsay Shosho defeated UVa’s Montgomery and Bruch by an 8-3 score. Virginia claimed the point with wins by Henriette Williams and Jennifer Tuchband over the Jackets’ Jaime Wong and Kelly Anderson at No. 1 by an 8-3 count and with a victory by Kristen James and Lori Stern over Catherine Gunn and Maria Nieto at No. 2 by an 8-6 score.

In singles play, Tech looked to rally, picking up a trio of victories on the day. Wong was the first winner, as she defeated Jennifer Tuchband in straight sets at No. 2 singles, winning the first set with ease by a 6-2 score, before holding on for a 7-5 second-set victory. Yellow Jacket rookie Lyndsay Shosho was solid in claiming a straight-set win at No. 5 over Marta Bechliwanis by scores of 6-4 and 6-0, while junior Sekita Grant evened the match at 3-3 with her win over Dora Bechliwanis at No. 6 by a 6-4, 6-3 score.

The match between Tech’s Catherine Gunn and Virginia’s Henriette Williams at No.1 was the deciding match, as Williams rallied for the win. Gunn won the first set by a 6-3 score, but was unable to hold on, dropping the next two sets by scores of 6-4 and 6-3.

Georgia Tech will now have to wait to learn if it will receive an at-large berth into the NCAA Championships when the field is announced on April 30. Full results from the ACC Tournament are available at www.theacc.com.
