Tech Women's Hoops Set to Host Wake in Key ACC Match-Up

Feb. 2, 2002

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team will look to return to the win column on Sunday, when it hosts Wake Forest in a key ACC match-up at Alexander Memorial Coliseum beginning at 2 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets (13-7, 6-4 ACC) will be looking to build on the most successful January in school history, as Tech finished the month with a 7-2 record, including a six-game win streak that was snapped with the 86-50 loss at Duke. The Jackets are currently tied for second in the ACC with North Carolina.

Tech will seek a sweep of the season series with the Demon Deacons (9-11, 3-7 ACC) as the Jackets won the year’s first meeting on January 4, by a 65-56 score in Winston-Salem, N.C. The victory at Wake Forest was the first of six conference wins for Tech last month and was a precursor for the Jackets’ five-game ACC win streak in the month. The Deacons are presently tied for seventh place in the league standings with Maryland.

Despite the large margin of defeat against the Blue Devils, Tech has continued to get strong play in the post from junior center Sonja Mallory.

Against Duke, Mallory recorded her team-leading fifth double-double of the year with 11 points and 11 rebounds. She has now scored in double figures in each of the Jackets’ last six games, with three of those being coupled with double-digit rebounding totals.

Sophomore guard Megan Isom was another bright spot against the Devils, as she was the second Tech player to score in double figures, netting 10 points to record her fifth double-digit outing in the last seven games. Isom also made her second start of the year in the game with Duke.

Duke became just the third team this year to out-rebound Tech, holding a plus-one rebound margin over the Jackets. Tech continues to lead the ACC in rebound margin at +9.8, while also rating as the league’s leader in rebounding defense, allowing its opponents 33.2 rebounds per game.
