ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women?s basketball team has been selected to participate in the Preseason WNIT for the first time in school history. The Yellow Jackets will open their 2002-03 campaign on November 15 against Charlotte at home in the first round of the event at Alexander Memorial Coliseum as the field for the tourney was announced on Wednesday.
“We are very excited to be a part of such an outstanding tournament as the Preseason WNIT,? said Tech head coach Agnus Berenato. ?The field certainly has a number teams that will be part of the top 25 this year and teams that were part of the NCAA and WNIT tournaments a year ago.”
The Yellow Jackets could potentially face a familiar foe should they get past the 49ers, as the winner of the game between Tech and Charlotte will face the winner of the contest between Kansas State and Ball State in the second round on November 17. The Wildcats defeated the Jackets by a 74-70 score in the 2001-02 season-opener for both teams.
This year?s Preseason WNIT features 12 teams that reached postseason play a year ago and four teams in Kansas State, Penn State, Mississippi State and Colorado State, which are expected to be a part of a number preseason top-25 polls this fall.
The tournament will continue with the semifinals on Wednesday, November 20 and the championship game on Sunday, November 24. All rounds will be contested at on-campus sites. The full Preseason WNIT bracket is available at www.womensnit.com. The time of the first-round game and the remainder of the 2002-03 Georgia Tech women?s basketball schedule will be announced in mid-August.
