Tech Women's Basketball Drops Exhibition to Premier Players, 72-64

ATLANTA – b The first half of the game saw the Premier Players jump out to a 4-0 lead by taking advantage of six-straight turnovers by the Yellow Jackets to open the half. Tech then got things going as the lead see sawed between the teams for the remainder of the period, with nine lead changes. Led by seven points from senior Sonja Mallory, the Jackets were able to pull ahead and take a 29-24 lead into the intermission.

In the second half, the Premier Players found their rhythm as they opened with an 11-5 run on the strength of three points from both Kym Hope and Tynesha Lewis to take the lead for good in the contest by a 35-34 count with 16:06 remaining. The Players they held the Jackets at bay, with six points being as close as Tech would get when a three-pointer from freshman Megan Harpring and a layup by junior Fallon Stokes cut the lead to 59-53 with 2:58 to play. The Players then closed out the contest by hitting 11 of 14 free throws down the stretch, taking as much as a 14-point lead at 69-55 with 1:07 to play. Harpring was strong for the Jackets at the end of the game, netting seven of her nine points in the final four minutes of play.

Mallory led the Yellow Jackets in scoring in the contest, as she netted 15 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with two blocked shots. Rookies Mallorie Winn and Megan Harpring each added nine points, with Winn matching Mallory’s total of 11 rebounds.

The Premier Players were led in the contest by Lewis, who finished with 18 points and four steals. Kym Hope added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Georgia Tech will open the 2002-03 regular season on Nov. 15 at 8 p.m., when it hosts Charlotte in the first round of the Preseason WNIT at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
